Image
Nikon D 810, Nikon 300mm F 2.8,
ISO 200, 1/1600s, F 7.1, Cropped

This image was taken at Machias Seal Island on a foggy but bright morning.  It was close enough to shoot an image that allowed for a crop of a head on portrait. To me it looks more sinister than the typical clown like appearance of a puffin.

Beautifully done, Warren - and I can see what you mean, the little clown has quite an unnerving stare from this perspective!

Carol.
+1.  Super capture Warren.  Looks like a sinister Clown disguised as a hitman!  Well seen and thought out.

ADKShooter, A fine portrait. Just a thought, but at ISO 200 maybe you could have increased the f/number to allow the entire beak to be in focus? My experience using the set-up you have is that image quality is still good up to f/13.

Warren, an excellent close-in portrait of this Puffin. The symmetry is close to perfect, if not perfect. I think this would make a great large print. Top-notch work.

Hi Gene,

Thanks for the suggestion.  My issue at the time was that I was not looking for a portrait but an overall view of a bird. This image occurred within the first 10 minutes of my first day (of two) there.  When this bird flew in he was only on the rock in front of me for a few seconds and still for about a second or two.  It really wasn't until I got home that I noticed in this one shot he was looking directly at me so I decided on the crop.  If I ever go again, and to anybody else who goes, I agree that somewhere around f11 or so is the way to go.

Certainly isn't your usual sweet-looking Puffin! I think the black cap and cloak are part of the "look" as well as that intense stare. Well done!

Beautiful image! Love the feather detail, colors, background, really everything. Agree it somehow does look a bit sinister!
