Photographed this male Bufflehead very close to sunset on January 1st of this year. This was the one and only time I have been close enough to a male Bufflehead for a proper photo.

Very nicely done.  This reminds me of the early days of digital photography with a dynamic range of maybe 5 stips where it was super hard to get both the whites and the colors in the head simultaneously.  How good we have it today...

Agree. And that is one of the many reasons I love the D850. You get beautiful files with deep and rich colors and excellent dynamic range. This is one exposure and required very little tweaking. I was able to capture many poses and shots of this male before he swam away. If you nail exposure and sun is low in the sky then these shots are easy now and that was not the case years ago.

Sweet shot Isaac.............you did a great job with the whites and blacks in this image. To my eye it looks like this could use a couple degrees of clockwise rotation............feels like he's swimming uphill..............but that could be because of the little wave in front of him.

Thanks Brian. You are not wrong I don't think. When I shot this the camera level showed as level but as the water was moving some it may have been off. I processed this months ago and if I remember correctly I cropped in a touch right at the end but then did not check for level again. Certainly no problem with moving it 2 or 3 degrees clockwise to make it nice and level and I will likely do that to the master file. Your input is always greatly appreciated.

Beautifully exposed for the whites and colours, and love the iridescence. A slight CW rotation would be better - but that's an easy fix for this great image.
