Rose-breasted Grosbeak (m)
Pheucticus ludovicianus

Head / face markings say female or "1st winter male".  Breast says male, so I'm going with a late-blooming young male.  The breast and underwing markings are yellow.  I've seen yellow House Finches and very orange Tanagers, but I've never seen this on a Grosbeak; Xanthrochroism is a condition in which some colors, often red, are replaced by yellow (think of the yellow Cardinals that sometimes make the news.)

Excellent pose and details Craig. Interesting if anyone can help with your thoughts on the colouring. Thanks for sharing that info.

Super cool looking Grosbeak. I have seen thousands of these birds but never one with orange instead of red. Awesome!

Wow- very interesting! Reminds me of how some waxwings have different colored tails according to what they eat, but this seems like something totally different. Doing a google search shows several similar variants. Black-headed grosbeaks have more of an orange breast. Hybrid? Very cool!
