Found this little chappie with the assistance of Neil McIntyre, a professional and guide in the Scottish Highlands.  Taken in the open. No hide.. One of the rarer birds in Scotland with only 2,000 nesting pairs.

Only time that seems to work to see them are in the winter months.  Despite looking very green, this was at -5C in early February.  Not much by some standards, but ideal for bringing them down to feed.

Techs.  Nikon D7100 and Sigma sport 150-600 at 600.  ISO 3200.  1/400 F6.3.   Processed today.

please feel free to view uncompressed.  Thank you for looking.

A really nice shot of this little guy, with crest up, on a cold winter morning. The detail on the bird is impeccable, Dave. And the pose and composition are excellent – nice use of space! Finally, the soft light and clean background put the perfect finishing touches on this very fine image. Very well done!  :)

Wonderful shot, Dave- such an appealing pose and perch, crystal clear details, and what a great thing to have found and photographed a rare species. Just love that perky head turn. Who is looking at who? ;)

So glad I opened this up to view, excellent. Good on you to find this rarity, certainly always adds to the joy in capturing the shot. Looks particularly impressive for the high iso.
