Male Mallard Duck
Anas platyrhynchos

The New Zealand mallard population is derived from 17 small importations of gamefarm mallards from England between 1870 and 1930, and two later imports of birds and eggs from a gamefarm in Connecticut, USA.

A fine portrait accented nicely by the rain, Zig. Very interesting information on the importation of Mallards into NZ.

My wife LOVED this photo. It is not only a very good portrait of a mallard, it reminded her of her beloved Aquarius, a mallard male that imprinted on her after hatching from the egg she was given in a college animal behavior class. As Yoda might say, “Gorgeous birds, they are; a great photo this is”.
