Beautiful pose, nice composition, and a close to perfect background. Well done, Gene.

Nice head turn, colors and catchlight. I’m undecided about the vegetation in the upper left, but everyone’s tastes are different.

Joe, Me too about the vegetation on the top left.  What I'm trying to do get away from a, "bird on a stick" and show a perch more in its entirety.  Also, since the vegetation is pointing (somewhat) at the bird, that it might help highlight the bird?  I know it's not typical, but I like trying different things.  Thanks for you comments.

I commend you for the more natural approach, Gene.  The cardinal is perfection, and the inclusion of the upper left leaves balances the composition beautifully IMO, and is so much more realistic than the sanitized clear background that some feel is the only way to go.

So, I’ve been shooting butterflies and dragonflies, I haven’t been checking out the birds gallery, yet yours pops up on the home page as an EP, and I immediately know who’s it is.  As usual, great bird, pose, and bg, but what stands out to me is the detail in the reds.  Soooo easy to oversaturate and lose detail with that with N Cardinals, Tanagers, etc.  Great job!
Good light,
Craig
