Often mistaken for an owl, these unique birds are actually part of the nightjar/ nighthawk/whipporwill family.

They have a very long, thin tongue that is forked on the end to grab insects.

They sleep on a low tree branch, often in the crook, and are very hard to see. When threatened, they stiffen their bodies to look like a branch - a behaviour called "stumping."

A very interesting rarity, Sandy. It has the same ability to camouflage as an owl, but definitely looks different perching in the crook of the tree. A great find photographed well.

Strange looking bird. It does looks like an owl little bit.
