This bird sometimes roosts in my garden, much to the annoyance of my dogs, who don't like it very much.  I don't think that the open mouth is a show of aggression or irritation, as the bird is quite relaxed and allows one to get fairly close to it.  It seemed to be simply a yawn, which I was lucky enough to capture.  It only did it once and shortly after I took this photograph it closed its eyes and went to sleep.

A good close-in portrait, Gavin. The detail and eyes really stand out well. The yawn is a bonus. Good job!

What a cool visitor to your garden! Seems to be pretty acclimated to you given the lens used.

These owls are quite at home in the suburbs.  It takes quite a lot to get them to move from a roosting place during the daytime.  This one was sitting in quite a small, low tree - more of a large shrub really.  It just makes sure that it is out of reach of my dogs

Your garden is getting more and more interesting, Gavin! Lovely intimate view. (You can keep your insects though......)
