One of the major issues of taking pictures under the jungle canopy are the many distracting branches and other organic material.  You just can't clone out everything without it looking weird.  The issue is how to emphasize the subject without extraneous distraction.  In this case, besides very minor cloning, I utilized Nik darken brighten center and border filter to deemphasize the thick branch in the background and make the Toucanete stand out.

Iso-1200, 500 mm PF, F8, 800th, fill flash at -3, D 500, handheld, full frame

Beautiful subject, love the colors and I like the look he gave you. The issue you mention is indeed a common one, the background looks quite complementary in my opinion. If the perch he is on were less black it would work even better...but not sure that is possible.

love the richness and beautiful colours. Great when viewed large. Glad you didn't do a clone exercise. There are lots of ways in the processing, as you mention to emphasise sections without the need to sterilise the image to conform to forums preferred settings.

Good flash use. Like it a lot. Light levels have retained that feeling of being in that canopy.

A lovely shot, and your processing has popped your subject beautifully from its natural setting - without sanitizing it to death ( as some do). Well done!
