We were shooting them just for fun, as the target birds (fishing Osprey) was a no show.

Wonderful shot of this 'just for fun' alternative, Karl!   :)       Stunning bird and lovely complementary background.

Super difficult shot. Very well done as sharpness and exposure are perfect.
I remember trying this kind of shot time ago without much success.

Karl, sometimes the "consolation" photo of some other subject is better than the target. Personally I'd rather come home with this photo than practically any Osprey photo. The bird is near perfection, but the background is what really makes the shot IMO.

Were you pre-focused on a perch waiting for the takeoff, or did you manage to track this in flight?

Thanks Mike.

This is exactly what I did but also managed to track the flight. I might post a couple more from the series.
The background mostly are dry, cut down and piled up "Christmas Trees" that makes a nice background as I figured out, but it is a very ugly perch.

Focus is spot-on...and I like the flight pose a lot too. 1 in 500 chance shot.
