Northern Gannet - Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Quebec
Conventional wisdom in most bird photography is that you want as blurred of a background as possible, preferably a completely solid homogeneous gradient of color. Sometimes, however, having it be just enough in focus to be able to tell what it is but not so much that it competes with the subject can really work. I think this Northern Gannet shot is one such shot where being able to tell that the background is trees rather than just a solid green sheet helps the image rather than hurts it...D700, 200-400mm @ 350mm, ISO 640, f/5, 1/1600s E.J.
