Taken last year, this time of January. There were many of them in the bay some came very close. This year the Duck counting people failed to find even a single one.

The declining number of birds is distressing, isn’t it. This is an excellent specimen, Karl. Beautiful color, pretty water, and great detail. Well done!

These have been declining year on year here too. It used to be I could go to almost any water in the are and find some but now they are very rare in my part of AZ.

Nice light showing off the head. As far as abundance, these parasitic nesters are dependent on other ducks for raising most of their brood...may mean low numbers of ducks generally with continuing warming of their nesting area. Here in Central Oregon, we still seem to have the normal numbers.
