Side-lighting helped me achieve the desired effect in this photograph of a Snowy Egret preening in a very balletic manner.

Thanks very much, Cynthia. I used a Canon SX40 HS camera, which has a fixed lens. It's essentially a point-and-shoot super zoom camera. Here are the settings. Aperture: f/7.1, Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec, Exposure Bias: -1.3 step, ISO: 100, and focal length: 80 mm.
