Chestnut-headed bee-eaters are one of 27 species of Bee-eaters found worldwide. Most species are found in Africa. Southeast Asia has eight.
All species nest in cavity nests usually dug into muddy/sandy banks. After hatching the chicks take around one month to fledge. Before fledging the senior chick will occupy the nest entrance and intercept all the incoming food, as seen in this image. This causes a problem for his siblings inside the tunnel as their food supply is cut off. The birds feeding the chicks will tolerate this for a while until they try gentle persuasion to induce the chick from the nest. They will stop delivering food and land 6-7 feet away with a juicy morsel. If the chick does not take the hint it will be forcibly removed.
