Ringed Teal - Tempe, Arizona
D500, 500 PF, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/400s
I've been looking for interesting things to photograph for my testing of the new Nikon 500 f/5.6 PF lens.  There's quite a bit of discussion on this exciting new lens in the following thread for those that haven't seen it:
viewtopic.php?f=57&t=280002

I was alerted by fellow NSN member and Wildlife moderator Cindy Marple to eBird reports of a Ringed Teal at a small local park so this morning I went to investigate.  I easily found this native of Paraguay, Bolivia, and Northern Argentina and was surprised to find it unbanded and free flying so while it is almost certainly an escapee it does not show the normal signs of a captive duck.

As for the lens, it is putting the joy back in bird photography, is very sharp even wide open at f/5.6, and so easy to carry around.  This shot was hand held, is uncropped and is dead sharp even at 100% - lots more discussion in the thread linked above.

Great lens needs a great shot to show it off! Love the soft background too, sets it all off nicely.

Nice shot E.J! Indeed very sharp lens. That new 500mm PF lens is on my wish list. I can see why it is so popular.

It's an awesome image. Most seem quite pleased with the lens. For me to replace my Canon gear, it's going to need to be good with the 1.4X TC. So hoping that that will be the case. Thanks for posting the image and hopefully many more.

Beautiful job of isolating this good-looking teal, EJ. Excellent detail and background. Thanks for sharing this image taken with the new 500mm lens.

E.J., getting the joy back into photography is a very good thing, and so is this beautiful shot.  This elegant duck posed so nicely for you on rock perch, and the complementary BG ties it all together - super image!

ISee the discussion in the thread in the Equipment forum.  I've done a lot of testing with the 1.4x TC already and find it to be a good combination, best shot with the VR in Sport mode.

Thanks E.J. I think I’ll be making the switch next spring.

I often think that whoever designed these beautiful teal couldn't quite decide what markings and colours to select. The end result is a real treat, as is this beautiful portrait. E.J.!
