Shot this evening. I stopped by after work to see how are owls doing.
I found mommy deep in the woods with no direct shot, so I tried to go around to get better angle, owl was not there. So I went back and owl was there again, she was playing with me :-) ,but still no clean shot, so I decided to get on little hill right in front of the owl. I didn't expect the owl to let me get this close, right in her face. She didn't care at all. I took tons of shots in portrait and landscape mode in different focal lengths. This is where zoom lens pays off.
This shot has zero crop @ 360mm. I used flash since light was almost gone. I decided to include as much ambient light as possible to use background behind the owl so I used slow shutter to allow more ambient light and using flash for filling the light.
If I would shoot higher shutter speed and higher ISO the BG would be almost black and I didn't want that in this shot. Sometimes I prefer black BG.

D2Hs, 200-500mm f/5.6
1/30, ISO-1000, f/5.6, @360mm, handheld, VR-ON, SB-800 flash (-1.33 Flash compensation) with Better Beamer.

Planning, patience, excellent technique and a steady hand! The end result is a beautiful portrait of this lovely lady. Well done, Ludo!

My thoughts exactly, Ludo. Great job with the exposure and fill flash!

Ludo, fantastic attentive and detailed portrait of mom!  Love the lichen on perch and the bits of ambient light showing the oncoming dusk.  I enjoyed hearing about your thought process and seeing the very successful execution of plan with the nicely balanced light sources - super work.

You'll have them eating out of your hands pretty soon, Ludo. I like this one very much- such a perky expression and excellent exposure.

Perfect balance of fill and ambient. A little large in the frame for me, but it sounds like you go some with more room around the bird.
