Shot this evening.  I was walking toward parking lot and I spotted owl on the tree across the canal. This young owl was focused on something not too far were I was standing. I knew it is going to take off.
Short moment later it took of and I got not so good flight shots, Light was gone completely.  I had flash setup and used it earlier. After owl landed (29 feet away) it covered something with it's wings called "mantling" I don't know if it caught something or not.
It was too dark to see. Took off shortly after.

D2Hs, 200-500mm f/5.6, 1/500, ISO-1000, handheld, (flash used -2.0 compensation) Better Beamer used as always.  This is FF shot with zero crop.

Please click on the image for uncompressed view, thank you.

Neat story, Ludo. Glad you were ready to capture this image when the opportunity presented itself. Nice work with the flash. Keep up the good work with the owls!

I have dubbed Ludo the "Owl Whisperer". As a result of his patience and perseverance he has been able to observe and often get photos of situations and behavior that most of us have never witnessed. It is indeed fun to go "owling" with him.
This image is an example of what I hope to get at some piont in time. I happened to not be with him when he got this one.

So cool with those intense eyes. I like how it is nestled into the bushes, perhaps protecting it's prey. Very nice shot!
