This is the immature Ross's gull we found last week near Barrow, AK. It is presumed to be a second year bird however it was observed copulating with the adult (see Glenn Bartley's image of the adult). Note that it has dark feathering in the wing shields. Also note that my image shows distinct pink coloration on the breast and extending up to the face. The color was not enhanced on my image. The adult had very similar coloration.
These were unexpected and dare I say very welcome visitors that were enjoyed by many birders and photographers. Please click image for uncompressed view, thanks. Canon 7D2, 600mm f4L IS II, ISO 500, f/8, 1/6400 sec, manual exposure Bob Kothenbeutel
