Normally the owl would have its eyes closed when landing near the cavity. I figured it was the way to protect its eye. When I was looking at this prey delivery sequence, at first, I thought it was kind of strange that the adult male would have its eye open during landing and passing of the prey. When I zoomed in and looked closely, the eye was closed. The feather pattern around its eye look like an eye itself. Nature, it never ceases to amaze me. I am learning something new with every pair that I get to photograph.

The owl Master strikes again!! Love the hand off pose and yes this is exactly why they close their nictitating membrane, to protect the eyes from being injured during the hand off. Well done
