Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas April 27, 2018.

Nikon D850, 300mm lens, 1.4 TC, 1/1000 sec at f/8.0, ISO 360.

It's hard to get quail off the ground with a clean background.  Was happy this female decided to cooperate.

One of the best frame with this species, Gene.
I like the perch and the pose, the BG too.

Lovely detail in the quail and nice background, Gene. Did get any shots of the quail on the ground in natural habitat?

Ron, South Texas probably has the highest number of Northern Bobwhite Quail in the U.S.  It's commonplace to be able to photograph Quail on the ground.  Getting one off the ground is not as common.  I'd say that a Quail on a perch of some type is still their natural habitat.  Quail will often fly into trees for the shade and stay in the tree for quite some time.
