Asiatic Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus

A large flock of Dowitcher is on passage through Hong Kong as the shorebird migration is in full swing now.
Captured early today, 29 Apr 2018, at the mudflat of Deep Bay, Hong Kong.

A lovely image, KK. The birds in flight just above those in the water is striking, and all of the birds are in focus and sharp. The light could not be better. Very well done!

It definitely is not easy to get good images of multiple birds, let alone to get them sharp with fine detail. You have succeeded on all counts with this lovely frame KK! I particularly love that almost all the wading foreground birds are in symmetry (there are always one or two that don't cooperate), while the ones still airborne add an extra dimension to the excellent composition. The light is beautiful. Love it!

Very nice group shot with some birds still landing...I wonder if these are the same Dowitchers we have here in Pacific Northwest.

The dowitcher species are:
  1.  Short-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus griseus
  2.  Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus
  3.  Asiatic Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus

As 1. & 2. are of North American species and are quite common and wide spread they do not overlap in range.
Asiatic Dowitchers breed in scattered pockets in the steppe and forest steppe regions of Siberia, Mongolia and north-east China. On migration they occur in small numbers in East Asia, the Indian sub-continent, the islands of South East Asia, northern Australia and New Guinea.
