Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas March 11, 2018.

Nikon D850, 300mm lens, 1.4 TC, 1/2000 sec at f/8.0, ISO 400.

Harris's Hawks reside primarily in South Texas and Southern Arizona.  My understanding is that in Arizona they are often seen in groups.  In South Texas, Harris's Hawks are usually alone or in a pair, but seldom in a group.

Detail is better if you click on the image.

Gene, this is an absolutely gorgeous portrait of this hawk! An image with a regal pose, a lovely background, and super detail. Congrats.

Best image of this species I've seen to date. Nice job, Gene.

Very majestic-wonderful clarity and striking pose. Which 300mm lens did you use?

Nice shot Gene! I love the green BG. I have some good shots of Harris's Hawk last year in Boise, Idaho at World Center For Birds of Prey.
Beautiful bird.

Cynthia,  I have the newest Nikon 300mm f/2.8 lens.  Wish for more length, but it's light enough to hand-hold and produces very good image quality.  Nikon's latest version of the 1.4 TC has virtually no loss of image quality and I would rarely ever photograph at less than f/4.  The sensor on the 850 is getting more from the lens than the 810 did, and the 810 was very good.

Thanks for that info, Gene. Thought it must be the 2.8. Interesting that you don't need a longer lens with this combo-couldn't be better!
