He doesn't look like much, but hardcore birders will tell you just how hard it is to get a clear view - or a clear shot - of any antpitta, let alone one as small as this 4 inch, cloud forest cutie.

Photographed outside Mindo, Ecuador (on Christmas!)
Canon 500mm f/4 IS on EOS 5D Mark IV
1/100 at f/4, ISO 2000, tripod, cable release

Cheers!

Yes - Antpitas used to be extremely hard birds to even see - most long term expert bird guides had only heard most of these birds and maybe had a glimpse of one or two - however that was all changed by a little farmer in Ecuador names Angel Pas - he trained Antpitas to come to his call and fed them earthworms - Last time I visited his place I think I photographed 5 different species including this one - the bet trained birds are Giant Antpitas - still not easy images to get because of dark tropical rain forests usually - but since Angel Pas - several other lodges and such have their own trained Antpitas - so just need to go to where they have been trained - I have managed to get OK photos of Chestnut-crowned Antpita in the wild feeding along side road close to Mindo in the fog. Total for me to date is 6 species hope to get some more on my next trip in March!! '
Really fun little bird and most thanks need to go out to Angel Pas - trail brazier on getting these birds just in a position to be seen!!!!

This photo was taken at Fefugio Paz de los Aves! I've visited a bunch of places in Colombia and Ecuador where they come out for food, either worms or insects sheets.

Beautiful shot Dorian!. I never shot Antpitta, but I can imagine it is not easy to get small bird like that in the forest.
