It is notable for conservation that the Red-headed Woodpecker has declined severely in past decades because of habitat loss and changes to its food supply. It is on the 2016 State of the Birds Watch List, being at risk of becoming threatened or endangered without conservation action. It is also listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. I had the cherished opportunity to photograph this one in the spring, 2017. Please click on the image to view it in shadowbox. Thank you.

Beautiful bird, very nice pose Ron.
Amazing clean and detailed for ISO 3200 and a crop sensor camera. I'm getting much worse at iso 800.
Do you use some special de-noise software?

Beautiful image. Red-headed woodpeckers are my favorite. I started with one in the spring/summer several years ago. This past summer I had 8 for sure....and I think 9. Two breeding pairs and 5 juveniles. I don't know how long they can survive but I'm doing my part.

Good for you, Lana! I have one family in the area which migrates in every year, and I just spotted them last week. I hope to photograph them again this spring, but their territory is quite large, so we will see. Keep up the great work with those in your area. It sounds like you have some excellent habitat to support that many. They are such magnificent birds!

Fantastic image of a bird i have yet to get in front of the lens.Love the separation from the tree trunk, curious head turn and pleasing BG. Thanks for the information regarding the birds status.
Thanks for looking,

I really enjoy this colourful bird against the green background, just awesome. It seems we are heading to a time when ALL birds can just be considered threatened or endangered.

This is a great image Ron. I grew up in Iowa many years ago when these were on just about every other telephone pole.  Last year I tried unsuccessfully to find one in Florida. This year I did locate one 2 days ago and got only 2 not very close photos before it flew off. I will try there again in a day or 2. Thanks for posting this great image. It brings back memories.

Thanks, Gary. You are absolutely correct. Of the 1,154 species assessed in the 2016 State of the Birds List, (which covered Canada, the United States, and Mexico), 432 species made the watch list, meaning they were vulnerable and in need of conservation.

Thank you, Bob. Congrats on the two photos you did get, and best wishes for more success with the Red-headed Woodpecker in the coming days at Florida. Perhaps you could post an image, if things turn out right.

Bad news but the picture is wonderful, Ron.
Great pose with a nice head turn and showing both legs.
The smooth light green background showcases the bird.
One of the best images of this bird I have ever seen posted.

What a beauty Ron! Nice framing with bird looking away. The green BG really add to the picture nicely. Well done.

Couldn't of asked for a better pose! Fantastic capture, techs are perfect. Fortunately for me there's an area close to where I live that has a number of these beautiful woodpeckers.
