Last year I spent a month in Florida and tried in vain for whooping cranes to photograph even though I followed several leads on ebird. This year I got some inside info from a local birder/photographer and found a pair on my first try. I was able to get hundreds of photos at fairly close range. I missed on the flight shots because it was very foggy and they flew in very early in the morning. I will continue trying for those until I have to leave here. Most, if not all, of these cranes carry a lot of hardware on their legs which doesn't make for the most pleasing images. These 2 had radio devices on their upper legs and bands on their lower legs (hidden by the foliage in this image).
The colors were not enhanced here in PP (shot with auto WB at 5200 K). The light was early morning sun. Please click image for uncompressed view, thanks. Canon 7D2, 600mm f4L IS II, ISO 640, f/5.6, 1/1600sec Bob Kothenbeutel
