Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas last May.

Nikon D810, 300mm lens, 1.4 TC, 1/1000 sec at f/5.6, ISO 800.

I'm looking forward to the Painted Buntings arriving in April.

Detail is better if you click on the image.

Love the color and detail in this image, Gene! The background is excellent, and it makes the colors in the bird stand out even more. Well done!

Wow, one to be proud of Gene, the colors and detail of this Bunting pop from a top shelf background.

Nice work
James,  Painted Buntings typically arrive in South Texas about the middle of April, but can arrive a little later.  My suggestion is for Painted Buntings is to wait until the last week of April or the first week of May.  The males stay around until about the middle of June.  The females stay around and raise their young until July.  Also, the males seem to be quite shy when they first arrive and then become pretty tolerant as time goes by.  If I would pick a day that is my favorite for photographing Spring migrants, it would be May 7th.  If travel is flexible, Ruth could call you when they arrive.  I will be at the ranch with a few friends the end of April/first of May.  I understand that Painted Buntings are also in Florida.  You might want to contact Jake Jacoby and he could probably point you in the right direction if you want to go to Florida.
