This image was made on January 12.  It was cold with the gulls drinking water from a hole in the black ice on the Cowenesque Dam in Tioga PA.  I needed a lot of minus exposure compensation to get the gull right so the ice was mostly black.  I used a curves layer to make the ice mostly black with just a hint of detail.  7D2 with 100-400 II and 1.4 TC hand held at F8. Thanks for looking and adding any advice.

The black ice allowed you to get very nice dramatic lighting on the gull with a very cool reflection. Well done, Ed

You have to click on this one to fully appreciate the dramatic effect! Nicely done, Ed.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments.  This image was a fun one to do.  At first I was frustrated with the lighting as I needed to use so much minus EV.  Then, as I was shooting, I realized what the final result could look like. I worked the scene a bit more to emphasize the effect.  I have one or two additional images with the gull in different poses.  Goes to show us that you never know what will present itself and turn out well.

Really like this. A very fun and creative shot. Broken ice is really cool.
