CORRECTION: I had accidentally put Sanderling in the post where it is Least Sandpiper ...thank you for notifying me Paul Fusco and Issac  Grant.
Shot few weeks ago at our friends house on the Washington coast.
I head out early to the beach before sunrise and waited for the sun to come out over the sand dunes, and I was able to get this piper shortly after sun just popped out over the dunes and light up the beach. It took me for a while to get closer to this fella staying low right at the water line.
You can see the bright spot in the dark grey sand ..reflection from the white belly casted this spot, due to very low angle.

I like the way the bird looks against the dark sand. The yellow legs and dark upperparts are wrong for Sanderling. Bird is a Least Sandpiper.

The dark sand and the early hour set up a great scene with dramatic lighting.
