Yesterday I went to my favorite place to photograph scoters. They have been coming in to feed here at high tide for the last several years. I sat on the beach behind a drift log and waited for them to work their way toward me. There were many white-winged (my favorites) and surf scoters as well as an occasional harlequin, a few goldeneyes and some scaup. No black scoters this time unfortunately. The scoters fed on these small crabs and some small clams which they swallowed whole, shells and all.
This scoter had tossed the crab into the air and caught in this image. Fun. Please click on image for uncompressed view, thanks. Canon 7D2, 600mm f4L IS II, ISO 400, f/7.1, 1/2000 sec, manual exposure, tripod Bob Kothenbeutel
