Techs were trusty old Nikon D800 and Sigma 150-600 OS S at 600.  1/200 F8 ISO 640.   This bird is re-habituated from the masses in the UK that are kept as pets, no longer wanted, maltreated and then rejected.   The chap that cares for this Owl as amongst other Owls, lives by the edge of his pants ploughing all for his Owl's wellbeing.  Not going into a social statement issue as there are plenty in the world that live by the seat of their pants, myself included at one point in my life, so know that well...   Just saying, that we as a race are responsible...  but do not know that... and probably don't care...

Very cool photo David. The background is most interesting and adds a lot to the photo.

Love the athmosphere of this shot, and agree about your comments.
Wildlife should not be kept as pets. When in Brazil, I was told of hybridisation of different Marmosets species entirely due to human behaviour (pet trade, displacement and abandonment) leading the local resident species being genetically modified gradually, and the fear that it may end up disappearing altogether.
In general, I am also against zoos... but we all know that some species are still with us thanks to them.
Complex situation, but there is always hope that our increasing efforts to protect will somehow counterbalance our reckless behaviour.

This image has to be clicked on to see the fantastic detail and textures, what a cracker of a composition David. As an expat it was a common site on a winters afternoon to see these owls hunting on the edge of a woodlot or a spinney. Thanks for sharing the story also.

I really like the detail and color in the wood surrounding the owl, and the way you positioned the little owl within the frame. Beautiful image and commentary, Dave.

Didn't notice this one posted earlier but wanted to make a comment. 1st off, the image looks great and I like the whole scene with the nice natural look to it.
Sorry to hear about the little owls and I know how things can be being a falconer and also in the pet trade for over 25 years.
At least we as a people have started to realize that the animals are more important then we thought and maybe some of our photography can enlighten
A few more people.
Thanks for the post
