Critically endangered, this bird can only be found in one spot, Los Canudos in North-East Brazil.

This photo does not start to illustrate the spectacle they give.
They roost in red rock canyons in a remote location, wake up 90 mn or so before daylight and start flying around the canyons, in total obscurity, their screaming amplified by the extraordinary echoes.
As day brakes they position themselves on top of trees far away, before flying dozens of miles away to feed, and returning at night.

The only chance to photograph them "properly" is if they land on a single lonely cactus, at the edge of the canyon. It happened the first morning, when there was so little light that I had to push to 12800 ISO, hence the grain. Obviously artificial lighting is not allowed... this is the best I could do. if in the general area the trip is absolutely worth it, a bit like going to a magnificent opera or concert.

Thanks for sharing these awesome birds with a very nice description. I can imagine how tricky is to take the picture of these birds.
