I posted tons shots of Short-Eared Owls in the past, but hardly any with a vole while flying.
This shot was made in Feb-6 2017 (out of the set of 11 frames). In this shot owl caught a vole and almost immediately was attack by Northern Harrier. I have seen this almost all the time. I don't even know where these Northern Harriers were hiding, just from nowhere start to harass the owl to force it to drop the vole. The owl did just that and Harrier was circling around for a few minutes trying to find the vole that owl just dropped. After the Harrier disappeared owl came back later and found the vole quickly and flew to nearby dike near the river to finish the meal. If you look closer in the picture you can see owl's open beak, that is from screeching at the Harrier. 1D4, EF300mm f/2.8L USM NON-IS 1/4000, ISO-400, f/2.8 handheld (heavily cropped) Thank you for looking. |
