Western Sandpiper

This is a juvenile (hatch year) Western Sandpiper, aged by his bright rufous scapulars. The adults are all beat up after breeding so it's the young guys I like to chase down once they migrate to the lower 48 from the Arctic.

Loving the 2x on this lens!

Canon 400mm f/4 IS DO II + 2x III on EOS 1DIV
1/1250 at f/8, ISO 1000, handheld on belly.

Beautiful bird, beautiful photo. 400 DO x 2 looks pretty sharp wide open, judging by this photo anyhow.

Curious about the location -- Pilarcitos Creek maybe?
