Hi
I work with some biologist friends who band wintering Saw-whet owls. I am generally the one who finds them, and most I do not disclose the location because I just do not like seeing the birds banded during the day light hours. In this case before release I asked if I can try for some set up images before the bird flew back into the thickets. This bird sat (awkwardly)  just long enough for me to grab a decent image.. Each year I find many of these owls in the NY area, but I rarely shoot them because the situation just would not make a decent image. This owl I watched for 3 months and after banding it continued to use an area in Brooklyn NY for several more weeks.
Nikon D800, tripod, ISO 200 1/800 F6.3. Thanks always for looking.

Great opportunity and lucky you to have some of those owls around. I like the setting, details and BG in this one.

I am sure you have many even breeding in PA.. Just find some good spots for winter roosts.

James, interesting info and the image itself is superb, love the perch and direct gaze.  What I especially enjoy is the BG color - ties in perfectly with the owl and the pine cones, a super attractive image.

I wondered about the clumsy pose when I first viewed this. I once did the same thing with a Cooper Hawk that had just been glanced by a car. I picked her up and drove out to a field to let it go. Just before I did I realized I had my camera with me so I put her on a rock and ran back to the camera as he stood up to regain herself with somewhat of a clumsy pose like this. I got a few nice frames before she took off. Still a wild bird shot but a bit of a setup.
Beautiful bird, perch and background. Very nice James
