Boat-billed Heron
Cochlearius cochlerius
San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico
7 June
Canon 1D Mark IV, 500+1.4
1/320 sec;   f/5.6;   ISO 640
Handheld from a boat.
I had never seen the expandable pouch on the lower mandible or the crest raised quite this much before!  This bird was squabbling with another bird just out of the frame to the right.  Would like to have pulled the 1.4x off to get some more in the frame, but with a rocking boat and the boat drifting there was no time.  Enjoy!

Sensational !
I have never been able to get a proper shot of the adult.... as they are so shy, but this is a "coup" !

The last time I was in San Blas, I brought my snorkel and mask and floated in the river (really a lot to see including caimens face to face)
