White Ibis, Everglades National Park, Flamingo, FL

First of all I want to say that we are overwhelmed by the activity in the forums here after just going public yesterday! Thank you all so much for the support in this new forum and please excuse our dust as we put in place the final touches. I will always look at it as a work in progress. Meanwhile, it has been impossible for me to keep up with all the e-mails and administration stuff going on here, so forgive me if I have not had the time to comment on all the images. I will try and catch up.

Meanwhile I wanted to add a post of my own to this fast moving forum!

I made this image this past March at Eco Pond which is at the southern most tip of the everglades National Park.

The best time to visit this pond is when the tide is rising in the adjacent Florida Bay. This forces the birds off the sandbars and into the pond to roost in the trees. Each evening the birds then fly back out to spend the night in the Keys. Flight opportunities are endless when the timing is right.

EOS 1D, EF 400/5.6L, manual exposure, 1/2500 @ F5.6, ISO 250

This is a stellar shot! I was at the same place, same time and have one to two hundred ibis flight shots, not one is remotely as good as this. It was a lot harder than it looked! All I can say is I'm thankful for digital, it saved me a lot in film processing costs that day.

Lovely reds - something that is absent in the Australian White Ibis - great shooting, Greg.

Amen to everything Heather said! To get one (of the few) in breeding color and great wing position was extremely difficult! Well done.

Amazinf this guy is sooo clean... Most if not all of my White Ibes images, have birds who just came from feeding in the mud flats and had pretty dirty plumage. This one is spotless.

Great flight shot!

EXCELLENT shot!!

While in Orlando a few weeks ago, I finally got to see a number of Ibis!! I have seen plenty of various herons and egrets on the Texas coast, but I was delighted to actually see some Ibis...and some of them foraging on the raodside puddles totally oblivious to the traffic blasting by!!!

Nice composition and color!!

Cheers,

Mark in Austin
