I am curious to hear what people think of this image. Lighting conditions were beyond terrible - midday sun positioned high and behind the subject. Clouds helped to diffuse that vertical light, but the bird was so cool/striking that I shot it anyway. I did a bit of work in post and this is the best that I have managed. I have been trying really hard to incorporate more habitat into my shots, so, even though this shot is a a bit busy in the background, I am generally OK with it.

All feedback welcome, good and bad.

Wow, what a rad bird. I am curious, was it displaying or are its neck feathers always so poofy. After hearing your description of the conditions i'd say this looks very nice. I actually like the vegetation in BG. Cheers
Thanks for looking,

Thanks for the feedback, Mike.

This is what it usually looks like! They are most often crouched down at water's edge with their necks retracted or drawn in. When I saw this guy like this I just started shooting despite the conditions since I was so amazed by that neck!

I have always loved these Tiger herons ever scince I first saw an image of one so I would have been firing away in the midday conditions too.
Looks like the cloud cover saved the day as it doesn't look to bad, no deep shadows and the colors and habitat look great too. Nice capture.

Very nice shot with a habitat. I think that including habitat help in the picture in many cases.

Fantastic pose with that stretched neck, Dorian!
I think you did a good job on post given the difficult lighting.

Looks like you did very well with the tough conditions you described. The bird is stunning and the scene looks great, always nice to have the inclusion of habitat.

Dorian, this is superb.
The BG is soft and the bird pops. Even with the diffused light,it was bright enough for a good shutter speed.
Light is everything, so direct sunlight at any time of day would have rendered a completely different image.
This is well done. I'm glad you "shot it anyway."
Oh, and I like the inclusion of the BG too.
