This is the female Paradise Shelduck, which are endemic to New Zealand. Whats cool about this species is that the male and female are very different in appearance, but equally as cool looking. They are a very large duck the size of a small goose, similar in size to a brant goose in NA. They can be found in virtually any body of water and frequent local duck ponds which makes for an easy target to shoot. Admittedly after only being here for a year and a half, I just walk past them now unless they are doing something really cool or the setting is special. It is amazing how quickly we get accustom to our surroundings and grow tired of what's actually really amazing. I recently took some time to appreciate this species again.

Mike, what a lovely bird with wonderful color markings, you might be used to them now, but this is a really special image.  Beautiful profile pose in lovely water surrounds with nice eye-level POV.  Excellent exposure too - very well done.

This is a great image. Its amazing what we overlook. Sometimes it just takes the right light and BAM something we had missed to that point suddenly seems really special.

I have never seen one of these beauties before. Awesome looking duck! Love the colors and the details in this one and those green secondaries look fantastic. Details and exposure control look great too. Nice capture Mike. I would love to see one in flight!
