Blood Pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus)

TAXONOMYPhasianus cruentus, Hardwicke, 1821, Nepal.
Fourteen subspecies usually recognized. The race I. c. tibetanus E. C. S. Baker, 1914(race tibetanus , male is more crimson on head and breast, and female overall darker) occurs in   E Bhutan and SE Tibet (E of affinis).

Status: Least Concern

VOICE/SONGS:  Vocal in breeding season. The territorial call is “glee-glee-keweee!-keweee!-keweee!

HABITAT AND BEHAVIOUR: Altitude range: 3200–4400 m: Inhabit sub-alpine rhododendron scrub, pine, juniper forests, and bamboo. Prefers areas close to water. Omnivorous; moss, leaf litter, grass shoots, insects, fruits, leaves, seeds, bamboo shoots, berries etc. Gregarious outside breeding season, during incubation males becomes more vigilant than females .The bird prefers to run than fly on alert and can easily speed in between the shrubs and bushes.

Chewang, quite the fancy-looking pheasant with the "blood" face and striated gold & red breast - they look striking in the snow, though not much camo for them.  Very nice in habitat capture.

Wow, what an amazing bird. I like the low angle but my overall impression leaves me wanting to see the rest of this bird. Thanks for sharing another interesting and new to me species Chewang.
