So i am currently living on the South Island in New Zealand and just recently over the X-mas break took a trip up to the north island. I managed to stay for three weeks with some friends up in Auckland. They were bird photography enthusiasts as well so we got out shooting a few times. This was one of my favourite species i shot on my North Island adventures. Just loved those wattles. My first time seeing a species with wattles. The perch it is on is flax, and they feed on it in the spring when it flowers. The yellow colouration on the forehead is the pollen from the flax flower.

Perfect pose and detail and you couldn't have chosen a better background color-wise for this bird.

Mike, great capture of this unusual (to me) species with those flashy wattles, love the straddled pose and lovely BG.  Interesting info about the flax and the pollen colored head - beautiful work.
