These little guys are pretty challenging...I found that the best way to get them is to have my eye at the viewfinder and my finger on the shutter....otherwise I just can't react quickly enough.

Nikon D810; Nikkor 500mm f4 VR; ISO 1000, 1/250th; f7.1; Nikon SB900 flash at 1/32 power with SB700 remote on cedar hedge background at 1/4 power.

Mike, Well Done. The flash set-up really helped bring out the details. Beautiful bird and set-up.

Great shot Mike. The only miner issue for me is the slightly out of focus portion of the perch on the right which a little more depth of focus would help. These are such tame little birds in my experience that they almost land on your hand when filling the feeder.

Thanks Bob. Yes, I have had the same experience with this species and also with various species of Chickadees. It seems that they realize that they are so small, they wouldn't make a decent meal for any self-respecting predator, so they don't show much fear. They sure don't tend to hang around in one spot for very long though...or maybe it's just that my reflexes are not what they used to be!
Cheers, Mike.

Mike, the pose is so engaging the way it follows the downward angle of the sweet lichened perch.  Lovely BG and details to boot.
