This is our provincial bird back home in B.C. They are very common at backyard feeders. I didn't have a backyard so to speak at my last place in Victoria. My friend Stuart Clarke was nice enough to invite me over on several occasions to shoot in his yard. We shot from a blind using the grass as the BG in this shot. A couple perches set up above the feeding table, and some peanuts tossed out brought his local mob in.

The berries on the perch add a lot to the image, and detail on the bird is amazing.

Hey Mike...don't tell me you've run out of NZ birds already! Nice job of showing the colours on this species, and great perch setup. This has been a dry year for Steller's Jays in my back yard, unlike last year when we had lots.
Cheers from the Canadian west coast,
Mike Wooding

That's beautiful. Great detail and contrasting colors and the two top corners filled in with berries really helps frame this shot.

Awesome image Michael, you have done this beautiful bird species justice. I have seen them in Jasper National Park on occasion, usually in the townsite actually. I just haven't had any luck getting a decent shot, they seem pretty skittish from my experience; a blind and setup would help.

Gorgeous shot of this Pacific coast version of the Steller's Jay (which is very different in appearance from the ones we have here in the intermountain region)
