Crested Caracara

Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas five days ago.

Nikon D810, 300mm lens, 1.4 TC, 1/1600 sec at f/6.3, ISO 640.

This is a very young Caracara.  Its beak is almost white.  As an immature Caracara matures, the beak becomes a darker bluish color and as a mature Caracara, the beak will be an orange color.  Crested Caracaras spend a lot of time on the ground and can run pretty darn fast.

Good shot Gene - low angle is great. I just counted 31 CC's in the orange groves in central Florida - it was amazing.
