Well, we travel far and wide, but sometimes great photo ops happen in our own backyard.  This jewel showed up yesterday in my backyard in Central Florida.  She was very busy looking for insects and grubs.

Nikon D500
Nikon 500 f/4E, FL, ED, VR lens
f/6.3, 1/1250, iso 3200

Great photo of this Pileated Nancy. I didn't know they were in Florida, but I do now. They sure love the oak woods in the great lakes area. Even more amazing is how good this image is at ISO 3200.

Marvelous Image Nancy:   What program do you use for noise reduction with the D500?  That image looks very clean at ISO 1600. hcarl

Thanks!

I use Nikon's NX-D for my initial RAW processing, then take a Tiff into Photoshop where I use the Nik/Google plug in set, including their Define noise program.

Nancy:  Thanks for the processing info. Another question?  What level of ISO do you feel that the D500 is capable of as compared to a D810 or D800 as I use now.  I seldom go over ISO 800 but would like to be able to use ISO 3200 on a regular basis when shooting Hummers without flash.

I am happy with the D500 up to and including iso 3200 as this image was taken at iso 3200, not 1600.  After that I switch to my D810.

Nancy:  Thanks again for the info and that was my mistake on the ISO as I had seen the ISO 3200 post on your image.  I am going to have a look at NX-D Raw processing as I use ACR now and from what I have been reading NX-D is superior  to the Adobe program.  hcarl

Wonderful seeing this Pileated in action- really like the mossy stuff around her. Love her expression too. Thanks for all the shooting info!

Awesome image Nancy! I do the exact same thing for processing with my D500n NX-D into Photoshop.

What a great yard bird and shot. Lucky you to have these so close to home. So jealous, my backyard here in LA is a Costco parking lot!
