A rare bird alert for a flock of Bohemian Waxwings was as good an excuse as any to go for a road trip up island.  A species we rarely get on Vancouver Island the recent cold snap has brought quite a few over the strait.  After checking a few spots with no luck I finally found them, with over 50 birds feeding on ice covered berries, literally surrounding me at times, an amazing shoot.

Perfect shot! The wing detail and BG are great, along with the berry in the beak and a touch of ice. The tail colors and pose are nice, as well.

Fantastic image Stu. Love your composition and the berries. I was going to go up there for them, but a birder told me she was up there and there would be no chance to photograph them. You would think after 37 years of bird photography, I would have learned not to trust birders about photography. I assume this was the Nanaimo birds?

Gorgeous shot- they are so striking-love that you got all the markings, and the berry as well! We get them in Vermont occasionally, but I suspect not this year.

Perfect! I've seen this species in the lower 48 once and in Canada once. They are one of my most wanted species so this is a real treat to view. Thanks!

I hear you Denis I missed a Purple Sandpiper by ten minutes last week and have missed it on four attempts since.

Outstanding image. Perfect perch and pose. The dark green background really shows off the colors on the waxwing. A few have shown up in Northern California this week.
