Young Male Painted Bunting

Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas.

Nikon D810, 300mm lens, 1.4 TC, 1/800 sec at f/5.6, ISO 800.

Female and immature Painted Buntings look exactly the same.  As the young male matures, he begins developing the vibrant male colors, usually beginning around the head like this young male.

Painted Buntings usually arrive at the ranch in early April and raise their young through the Summer.

Wow, what a striking image this is, Gene. The best young male image of this species I have ever seen!!!
