Barn Swallow

Galveston County, Texas

D5, 300/2.8, 1.4TC, ISO 1000, f9, 1/5000

The D5's auto-focus gets all the credit for this image. The auto focus on the D5, is far better than the D810 that I use to use for this kind of shooting. I find this flight pose one of the hardest to capture. Coming at you with great speed and banking erratically. Taken a few days ago.

Alan, This is a darn hard shot to get with any camera. Maybe only possible on a consistent basis with the new autofocus systems. A truly outstanding shot.

Very impressive image Alan!
Please don't tell me that you shot this vertically. If you did I will bow down to you right now!

Wow, excellent image Alan - certainly a tribute to the D5 - but also to your skills - congrats.

Razor sharp image -- love the detail. It's fun to watch the agility of these guys hawking insects at dusk.

You are the master at this Alan! I don't care how fast your auto focus is.... this is all you!

I can only heap further praise on this wonderful photo, great work Alan. I too am interested if this was shot as a vertical, just have to ask.. Do you use a D500 crop body, I understand the AF is equal to the D5, any opinion on this one way or the other?

Hey Gary,

No, I did not shoot this vertical. It's cropped vertical for a horizontal. I sold my D500 as it was not a good fit for me, although it would be a great camera for this kind of photography (the reach of a crop body, higher clean ISO and the auto-focus engine of the D5) Thanks, Alan

Thank you very much Alan for your reply to my questions. I'm on the fence whether or not a D500 should be my next body, as the main camera or even as a complement to a full frame body. An "embarrassment" of choices for the photographer these days. Everyone's needs are different but I trust and value your opinion a great deal. Thank you.
