This is a Blue-footed Booby with its bill barely piercing the surface of the sea. They circle above the ocean, stop on a dime and then hurtle beak first toward the ocean turning themselves into an avian torpedo. When their prey is in sight, these seabirds utilize the physical adaptations that make them exceptional divers. They fold their long wings back around their streamlined bodies and plunge into the water from as high as 80 feet. Amazing birds

Excellent timing on freezing this moment. Not an easy shot to get.

I have always loved shooting diving birds and have always wanted to be out to sea with my rig while watching Gannets and Boobies diving.
This thing looks like a missile about to hit the water. Perfect moment captured and I like the fact that we can see the blue feet and I like the water colors.
Well done

Nice job. I was trying to do that down there last week and was unsuccessful. The frame rate of my D800 wasn't up to the task. I did get some Pelicans breaking the surface like this. The Blue-footed Boobies seem to hit the water at a high velocity though.

The trouble with this image is it looks like something frozen in time out of the ice world or something. If someone did not tell me what I was looking at then I would not have a clue. I think it fails except for a timely capture I guess...As far as a nature image I think it looks absolutely ridiculous...it fails miserably even though it actually caught a moment at 1/3200 of a second... which the eye can't. So maybe like those images of bullets going through an apple it has value?

Viscerally it does nothing for me yet it made editors pick. I must be screwy I guess....I do like the tonal transitions in the water despite the cooked saturation...
