I like portraits and curious how to crop them for passerines. Open to suggestions on that or anything else.

Nice detail. The seed is a plus. did you really mean Canon 55 F4? You must have been close.

I've always found crops difficult as well. I looks a bit bright to me but that may just be my screen. I noticed you used 4.5 for f stop. For a portrait I would be tempted to stop down a bit more if you have enough light for more dof.

I love portraits but have also had issues with getting the crops right on passerines. They seem to work best on birds with longer bills, but this is a a nice shot any way you cut it.

Very nice detail here Matt, I think you could go a bit darker. With birds with crests like this I often like to shoot close up portraits as verticals as it seems to accentuate the crest.
