Heather and I are still in Cape May, NJ and we finished up with our group today. Tony Medici has been on a number of trips with us in the past and he has a history of sometimes leaving just before something good happens. Not sure if it's good karma for us or bad karma for him. ;) This afternoon it was cloudy after raining in the morning. We decided to head to Stone Harbor having spent the weekend locally in Cape May; there are usually a greater variety of smaller shore-birds around Stone Harbor and with the cold front coming through today we knew we could expect just about anything. We encouraged Tony to join us, reminding him of what happens when he bugs out early.....

This Peregrine Falcon made it's way down from the north to find itself tired on the open beach. I got low and slowly moved toward it, while shooting with stacked converters, until I eventually got closer than I would have thought possible.

I couldn't help but think of what Tony was missing....

EOS 10D, 600/4L IS, 2xTC, Manual focus, 1/200 @ f11, ISO 400, Flash @ -2/3, posting from a laptop.....

So it's going to be one of THOSE nights. :? Time to sleep, maybe tomorrow I'll have something nice to say to you. :D You are going to need to explain that front/migration thing to me again.

Hey Greg,

great shot .. I've yet to capture one of these guys in film, though have had a few wonderful opportunities to do so. They're simply breathtaking birds, IMO.

I like this shot a lot, but the catchlight from the flash looks a somewhat harsh to me here .. something I'm not usually overly concerned about. Other than that, very sweet.

Cheers

Carl

Outstandin'. Beautiful feathers and pose. The head turn and smooth bg really make this one stand out.

Great shot. It sounds like Tony is definitely one to have around....just so he'll cut out early and bring in something interesting.

Now are you going to make Tony leave Homer early too? ;)

Love everything about this, but what really stands out for me is that little bump in the sand just behind the feet. I'm guessing that's where he landed and the depression and mound suggest the power and strength of the bird.

Yikes!
This wide open, low-angle view makes the bird seem even larger and more powerful than it is in real life....and that's saying something. And you've caught that typical contemptuous falcon stare.

Magnificent, Greg. He's thinking, "C'mon dude, you want a piece of me? Take your best shot and then I'll take mine - with one claw tied under my wing."

Tony, if I were you I'd think of killing myself. I did when I left you and went to Venice - and you got shots of the Magnificent Frigatebirds near Estero.
